Toronto Home Renovation: Bathrooms, Basements, Additions and Remodeling

A bathroom is supposed to be designed for comfort as well as looks and many people don’t understand this because they say they only spend a small amount of time in the bathroom everyday; however, when thinking of bathroom fixtures, it is necessary to think of your comfort when laying out the design of the bathroom. One of the best ‘rules of thumbs’ is to choose the bathtub before choosing the other fixtures like the bathroom sink to make sure the focal point is the tub and it will match the sink in its function and design. When it comes to bathroom fixtures, a homeowner should do some ‘trial and error’ to see what works for them. Go to restaurants and hotels and use their washrooms to see what you like and don’t like. These are the places that have the most modern and different style bathroom sinks that would be available in bathroom stores and through remodeling companies. You might like something but the water pressure could be too low because it squirts water too high or the opposite might be true.

To create a basement where there is low ceiling, underpinning is carried out and this consists of a method which involves excavating the ground in alternating sections then reinforcing concrete shuttered and poured under the existing and exposed foundation. The same process is performed all around the basement, making sure structural support is adhered to at all times, and once each section has cured or dried, then the foundation can be lowered and the basement is created.  If a separate entrance to the basement is preferred, then the builder and designer would determine where it would best fit structurally. A foundation contractor would then cut into the concrete wall, after the surrounding wall has been secured, with a backhoe. The doorway is then framed with braces and supports for the door of your choice. If the new entrance to the basement is in the back of the house, there is no need to match the front door; however, if the new entrance is in the front of the house, then matching the front door would be a priority.  Once a door is chosen, it is lowered into place and then caulked all around to prevent moisture and water from seeping into the basement. Because many basements are underground water damage is the number one cause of both major and minor repairs, no matter what the season is.

Additions to a house could be for a number of reasons: the family is growing with more children or extended family members are moving in; someone in the family is starting a home business and needs an office and supply area; or in order to increase the value of the home, an additional family room or larger kitchen is being added. Additions to a house can take on many shapes and be added to any existing room. Many of the larger, upscale houses are adding nanny suites to accommodate a nanny so that they may have their own private area of the house which might include a full bathroom, small kitchenette and a good size bedroom with a television viewing and sitting area. Some additions could be added to the top of the garage and attach to the main upstairs hallway with a bridge or walkway between the main house and the garage room. This would give the person staying or working in the garage room more privacy yet still allow them access to the main living quarters when needed. Additional rooms could also be for the entire family to enjoy such as a home theatre or a workout room/home gym area.

Remodeling a house instead of moving is a financially sound decision for many people. Condominiums can be remodeled and updated to look new and modernized with larger family rooms or combination living room and dinning area. Perhaps your family is hiring a nanny and is in need of a nanny suite; therefore an add-on to the back of the house with a bedroom and a bathroom would be in order. Other remodeling jobs include bringing plumbing and electrical wiring up to current codes because some of the houses in your area may have been built long before the electrical and plumbing codes were put in place to protect the family from flooding and fires. Maybe your house is not handicap accessible and now it needs to be. Constructing ramps over the front stairs or converting inside stairways into a small elevator or ‘ride along chair’ would be one of the ways of helping to adjust a home for a handicap person. Adding rails in the bathroom for the shower and toilet, lowering the sink in both the bathroom and the kitchen and some of the shelving units would be other ways to assist a person confined to a wheel chair.
