Even if you have already purchased your flooring from somewhere else and decided not to install it yourself, we can help by installing it for you. However, we know the new laws governing flooring and as of Sept. 09, 2010, it will be illegal to import or manufacture any architectural coating containing more than 250 grams of volatile organic compounds – VOCs. (The total amount will be illegal two years after that.) This is a directive from the Canadian Environmental Protection Act – Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Concentration Limits for Architectural Coatings. It will successfully prohibit 31 of the hundreds of products used in wood coating, stain sealing, glazers and finishes along with wood stains. It is important to prepare a concrete floor before applying any style of floor covering. This is done by creating a ‘subfloor’ typically made of a plastic and then a moisture-resistant subfloor over that – marine plywood is usually used. Once a subfloor is laid down, any type of floor covering could be secured on top of it for a beautiful foundation to anchor and build upon any style room. What is underneath a floor is almost as important as what is on top of it. There are new advancements that allow a construction company to install quiet systems or what’s known as ‘quite walk systems’ so that when a person walks across a wood floor, no noise is heard. There is another system which warms the floor in addition to keeping the noise down, no matter if it’s a wood floor or ceramic tile floor. This warming system will keep feet warm and toasty when walking barefoot across the new floor. Another new flooring trend, especially in condos and apartment buildings because of the noise absorbing properties, is the natural cork floating floors. These cork floors consists of three layers of one- by three-foot planks. Typically, the surface is 100 percent high density cork with five coats of UV-cured acrylic finishes that contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compound). An engineered floor is worth mentioning. It offers real wood look since the veneer of real hardwood is laminated to stable and uniform plywood substrate. Sanding down an existing hardwood floor verses adding a new hardwood floor can be a difficult decision because booth will give your house a new and exciting look. However, sanding down existing hardwood floors could bring out small imperfections in the wood that have formed over the years and if a homeowner doesn’t mind a little ‘character’ with their floor, then this might be the way to go. But if you are looking for a more uniform look, with each piece neatly nestled into the last one and looking nearly exact, then a new hardwood floor or snap-together floor would be the answer for this homeowner.
